Thomas B. McGuire was the second highest ranking American Ace of World
War II. Dealing with the harsh tropical conditions in the New Guinea
area, P-38s of the 5th Air Force helped wreck the Japanese war machine
in the South Pacific. McGuire had 38 kills when he died trying to save a
fellow pilot from an attack. "Pudgy" was an early P-38H model,
one of the first effective types against the more nimble Japanese
fighters.
