With
the initial success of "Aerial Envelopment" during the formative years
of the war in Vietnam it became clear to the U.S. Army that a dedicated
helicopter gunship was needed to replace the makeshift Huey "Hogs" that
were seeing so much action. Bell Helicopter took the requirement to
heart and using the same basic framework as their famous Huey, they set
about to design what turned into the Huey Cobra. The Cobra, when it
reached Vietname, proved to be a devastatingly effective design, and
forty years later updated versions still serve the Army National Guard,
and Marine Corps as an integral part of their fighting package.
This
"Snake" is from the 7th Sqd., 1st Armored Cavalry Regiment in Vietnam,
1969. Its coming in on a firefight, a snake in the grass, along
one of the waterways of the Mekong Delta.
