An
F-89J Scorpion of the 124th FIS, Iowa ANG, 1967. The F-89 was a 1950s
era Air Defense Interceptor. Too slow to chase down the potential Soviet
bombers heading into North American Airspace, it was initally equipped
with wing tip tanks that held dozens of rockets, which were to be
launched en masse at the formation of bombers. By the1960s these dozens
of missiles were replaced by an equally desperate gambit - a pair of
small nuclear tipped weapons. Yep, a local nuclear blast would knock the
bombers out of the sky. Good thing the world never had to find out how
effective this plan was!
